Real or fake turquoise, can you really tell the difference?

1. Observe the color and texture:

Real turquoise has a natural color and rich sense of hierarchy. Observed under natural light, the real one usually shows a uniform and natural transition between shades of blue or green tones, and the surface is often accompanied by iron lines (black or brown fine lines). Fake turquoise is often a single color, dull, lack of animation, and even the existence of obvious color difference or color block.

2. Test water absorption:

Turquoise has a certain degree of water absorption, which is due to its internal contains more tiny pores. After soaking turquoise in water for a period of time, if water stains appear on the surface or the color becomes darker, it indicates that it is genuine; on the contrary, if there is no change, it may be a fake. However, it should be noted that the water absorption of treated turquoise (e.g., impregnated with glue) will be weakened, so this method is only applicable to untreated raw ore.

3. Specific Gravity:

The density of natural turquoise is usually between 2.6-2.9g/cm³, while the density of imitations is often on the low side. You can use an electronic scale to measure the mass of the sample and combine it with the volume to calculate the specific gravity value for comparison. Of course, this method requires a certain degree of professional knowledge and equipment support, for ordinary consumers to operate more difficult.

4. Seek professional identification:

For high value or unknown source of turquoise, it is recommended to send to the authority for testing. Formal jewelry appraisal center will use X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, Raman spectrometer and other advanced instruments to conduct a comprehensive analysis to ensure accurate and reliable results.
