Synthetic opal is a man-made gemstone designed to replicate the chemical composition, internal structure, and physical properties of natural opal. It typically consists of silica spheres arranged in a highly regular, ordered pattern, which creates its characteristic play-of-color through light diffraction. Unlike natural opal, synthetic opals often display a more uniform and regular color pattern, sometimes described as a "chicken wire" or "lizard skin" appearance under magnification. They may contain resin (about 20%) combined with silica (about 80%) in some types, while others are resin-free and chemically identical to natural opal. Synthetic opals are generally more affordable, more durable, and less prone to cracking than natural opals. They do not fluoresce under UV light and can be distinguished by their uniformity and specific growth patterns. These qualities make synthetic opals popular for jewelry, offering vibrant colors and consistent quality at a lower price point.

What are the most valuable types of precious opal?
The most valuable types of precious opal are primarily distinguished by their body tone, play-of-color intensity, rarity, and origin. Among these, black opals are considered the rarest and most valuable variety due to their dark body tone, which provides a striking contrast that enhances the brilliance of their play of color. High-quality black opals, especially those from Lightning Ridge, Australia, can command prices up to $20,000 per carat or more, with exceptional specimens like the Aurora Australis and Flame Queen opals valued in the millions.
Crystal opals are the second most valuable type, prized for their transparency and vibrant play of color. They are generally more affordable than black opals but can still reach prices up to $6,400 per carat for top-quality stones.
Fire opals, particularly those with bright red and orange hues, are also highly valued, especially precious fire opals from Ethiopia that display neon violet and green play-of-color. While Mexican fire opals tend to be more common and less valuable, Ethiopian fire opals are sought after for their rarity and vibrant colors.
Among famous and historically significant opals, the Flame Queen Opal and the Olympic Australis Opal are iconic examples of extremely valuable black and white opals, respectively, with auction prices reaching into the millions. View More
